MEET THE JUDGES FOR SEASON 1

Mike Esser

Mike Esser is in his 39th year of teaching and his 30th year at Central High School in La Crosse, WI where he currently conducts the Select Robed Choirand the Upper Level Treble Chorus. Mr. Esser received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He has done further study at the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Iowa, Northern Arizona University and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

Mr. Esser’s choirs have been invited to perform at various college choral festivals in the Midwest, Iowa Public Television, the State and Regional Music Educators Conventions, and the State and Regional American Choral Director’s Conventions. Over 70 of his CHS voice students have been selected as finalists at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Fall Competition and his soloists have performed at various vocal festivals. Mr. Esser was the director of the Grand Central Station Show Choir for 28 years. Over the past three decades, GCS was selected Grand Champion in 65competitions and was awarded several vocal, band, and choreography awards. Also, the select concert choir from Central has received numerous 1st place awards in concert choir competitions held in the upper Midwest region

Michelle Jensen

Michelle Jensen Is the founder and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles based “Sterling Ensemble”, Michelle is a choral director, clinician, and teacher. Currently conducting the Chamber Singers and teaching Music Education at Azusa Pacific University, she has also served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Southern California where she earned her BM, MME in Music Education and DMA (ABD) in Choral Music. Michelle was a member of both SAG and AFTRA with an extensive performance resume including commercials, voice-overs, music videos, guest-star roles on television and live performances. Prior to joining the faculty at APU, she was the founding director of the choral program at Burbank High School and choreographed for many programs across North America, including John Burroughs High School and the Youth Singers of Calgary. Under her direction, the APU Chamber Singers has traveled to Australia, Austria, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, and Wales, including featured performances at the Sydney Opera House, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, Thomas Kirche in Leipzig, Basilica San Marcos in Venice, and a special commemoration concert for the 75th anniversary at Buchenwald Concentration Camp. The APU Chamber Singers was invited to perform for the National Collegiate Choral Organization National Conferences in Fort Collins, Colorado in 2011 and Portland, Oregon in 2015.

In the summer 2013 under Jensen, the APU Chamber Singers was selected to represent the United States at the 50th International Competition of Choirs in Spittal an der Drau, Austria where they were awarded first place in every category. Under her direction, they competed summer 2015 in the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen Wales, winning first place in three categories. In 2019 she served as the conductor for the ACDA Connecticut All-State Mixed Honor Choir. Michelle continues to serve as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, honor choir conductor, and guest artist throughout the United States and abroad.

Chris Pratt

Christopher Pratt is the Director of Choirs at Grosse Pointe South High School in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. He obtained a BS in Music Education (2000) from Ball State University, an MS in Educational Leadership (2011) from Indiana University and an EdS from Oakland University (2018).

At Grosse Pointe South High School, Mr. Pratt directs four choirs, including the nationally acclaimed Pointe Singers (mixed) and Tower Belles (women); both choirs have received numerous Grand Champion awards since returning to competition in 2013. They have also earned captions for best vocal sound, choreography, show and costuming. Additionally, his choirs tour internationally, most recently to Austria and Poland in February of 2020. He also serves as the President of the Grosse Pointe Education Association for over 500 teachers.

For eleven years, Mr. Pratt was the Director of Choirs at Center Grove High School in his hometown of Greenwood, IN. His award-winning ensembles won top honors at national and regional competitions, including seven consecutive national titles from 2003 – 2009. Collectively, his choirs have won over 120 Grand Champion awards and numerous specialty awards.

In 2001 Mr. Pratt was a proud recipient of Danville District 118, David L. Fields Outstanding Teacher of the Year. And in 2011 was featured in Choral Director’s Magazine for his work and success in choral music.

Mr. Pratt also serves as the Executive Director for the Michigan Music Education Association with over a thousand members statewide.

EP. 4 GUEST JUDGE

Jeff Clark

Jeff S. Clark is the director of choirs at Indian Hill High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and functions as the Show Choir Repertoire and Resources Chair for the Ohio Choral Directors Association. At Indian Hill, Jeff’s choirs have received Superior ratings in OMEA contest and recently performed a concert tour of New York City. For twelve years, he was choral director at Fairfield Senior High School in Fairfield, Ohio. While at Fairfield his show choirs Rhythm Express, Pure Elegance, and the Choraliers drew national acclaim as top contenders regionally, nationally, and internationally; claiming over seventy overall Grand Champion awards. From winning the 2012 show choir division in the 7th Annual World Choir Games to national titles in large mixed, women’s and middle school divisions, his groups were also consistent finalists in every competition attended since 2004. As an active clinician/adjudicator, he has worked with several ensembles across the Midwest and California. Jeff received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and his Master’s degree in Music Education from Miami University in Oxford, where he completed extensive research in the history of competitive show choir. He is a board member of the Cincinnati Academy of Performing Arts, as well as a member of ACDA, NAfME, and the Cincinnati Choral Society
